Help! We Bought a Community Centre!

Today, we took over Whitfield Community Centre!

If you haven’t been following the saga, here’s the short version: back in August 2024, Derbyshire County Council shut down the Ebenezer Street building, which had been a youth and community centre since the 1960s. That left a lot of people—us included—without a space. Whitfield Food Club had been using part of the hall once a week to distribute food, but when the closure was announced, we realized we had two choices: either let it go or fight to save it.

So, we fought.

It’s taken nine months of determination, negotiation, paperwork, fundraising, and a whole lot of support from our neighbours. We got help from the amazing folks at Gamesley Community Centre, two local churches, the Glossop Volunteer Bureau, councillors, and plenty of others who believed in what we were doing. Even a few days days ago, this whole project was hanging by a thread. We only pushed forward because we believe Whitfield will come together and make this work.

And today we officially take over.

What does that mean? Well, the centre is back in action! We’ve got 500 square metres of space for the community—youth activities, public events, private bookings, meetings, offices, you name it.

And that’s where you come in.

We need volunteers. We need donations. We need people to hire the space—whether it’s for clubs, societies, birthday parties, weddings, or any other event. Basically, if you can think of a way to use the centre, we’d love to make it happen.

This is a huge moment for Whitfield. We fought for this space, and now it’s ours. Let’s make it something incredible.
